Some Interesting Facts about Linux Kernel


Here i collected some interesting facts about the Linux Kernel.



  • Linus Torvalds Developed the linux when he was a student (21 years old) at the University of Helsinki in 1991
  • In the beginning Torvals wanted to call the kernel he developed Freax (Combination of free, freak, and X to indicate Unix like system)
  • Linux Kernel is written in the C Programming language
  • Google's Android, Nokia's Maemo are built on top of the Linux Kernel
  • Only 2% of the present Linux kernel has been written by Linus Torvalds
  • Torvalds created Linux based on GNU GPL (General Public Lisense)
  • Thousands of developers all around the world are continuously contributing to the development of the Linux Kernel
  • Linux kernel 1.0.0 was released with 1,76,250 lines of code. The latest linux kernel has more than 10 million lines of code
  • A guy named William Della Croce Jr. registered the name Linux and demanded royalties for use of the mark. Later, he agreed to assign the trademark to the true owner, who is Torvalds.
  • The Linux Kernel can be found on more than 87% of the World's top 500 Super Computers.
  • Vanilla Kernel is the unmodified version of the Linux Kernel
  • Linux is now one of the most widely ported operating system kernels, running on a diverse range of systems from handheld computers(smart phones) to mainframe servers
  • An asteroid was named after the Linux kernel created
  • Debian was one of the first GNU / Linux that was constituted and organized as a community of developers.
